How do I register the business name Superman Virtual Assistant in Texas?

Superman Virtual Assistant is an exciting name to see on a new business in Austin. Before the sign goes up and the first invoice goes out, Texas expects "Superman Virtual Assistant" to be on record through an Assumed Name Certificate. We cover the name registration, the tax IDs, and the licenses that let you open in Austin, and finish with a quick recap.

How Texas handles a business name

In Texas, a business name other than your own legal name is registered as a Assumed Name Certificate, which you will also hear called DBA, assumed business name, or fictitious name. A sole proprietor or partnership using a name that does not include the owners' own names must file one, and so must a corporation or LLC that uses any name other than its exact registered name. If you operate under your exact legal name, there is nothing to file.

Newspaper publication: Texas does not require this name to be published in a newspaper.

How long it lasts: A Texas certificate lasts up to ten years, and a new one has to be filed before it expires if you want to keep using the name.

What Superman Virtual Assistant needs

  1. Assumed Name Certificate – Registering "Superman Virtual Assistant" puts the name on the public record under your ownership, and it is what banks, suppliers, and landlords usually ask to see.
  2. Name check – Choose a name that is easy to spell and not confusingly close to a business already operating nearby. Registering a DBA announces your use of the name, but only a trademark gives you exclusive rights to it.
  3. LLC (limited liability company) – A DBA only registers a name. Forming an LLC is what puts a legal wall between the business and your personal assets. A missed deadline that costs a client a contract can turn into a lawsuit, and an LLC limits it to the business. If you form the LLC under the exact name Superman Virtual Assistant LLC, the LLC filing itself protects that name and you will not need a separate DBA for it.
  4. EIN (federal tax ID number) – Think of the EIN as a Social Security number for the business: banks, suppliers, and clients who send you tax forms will all ask for it.
  5. Texas sales and use tax permit – A pure service usually is not taxable, so you may not need it. If you also sell products, supplies, or gift cards, register before the first sale.
  6. Business license – Most places require a local business license to operate, including home-based businesses. Check the rules where Superman Virtual Assistant will operate in Austin, and ask about home occupation and zoning rules if you work from home.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a virtual assistant business it is NAICS 561110 (Office Administrative Services). That makes 6 items on your list.

Tip: Store client passwords in a secure password manager rather than spreadsheets or email, and turn on two-factor sign-in everywhere.

To recap: Superman Virtual Assistant in Austin, TX needs an Assumed Name Certificate, a name check, an LLC, an EIN, and a business license. Handle these early and the business starts on solid ground.

I want to start a process serving business in Alabama. Which registrations do I need?
Answer by SellerPermit.com:
10/14/2026 12:00 AM

Start with the business itself. Alabama has no general state requirement to register a DBA, and a sole proprietor working under a personal name needs nothing at the state level. A trade name registration is optional, and no newspaper publication is required.

• An EIN for your bank account and client contracts.
• A local business license where you operate.
• An LLC if you want your personal assets separate from the risk of a disputed service.
• A sales tax license only if you also sell goods, since a pure service usually does not need one.
• Approval to serve: in some places the court has to approve private process servers, so ask the court where you plan to serve before you advertise.

I want to start a process serving business in Tennessee. What do I need to get started?
Answer by SellerPermit.com:
10/14/2026 12:00 AM

Process serving is a service business, so most of the setup is about the entity, the name and the paperwork around the job rather than a seller's permit. Services usually need no sales tax permit unless you also sell goods.

1. Choose a structure. Tennessee has no state filing for sole proprietors using a trade name, but an LLC that operates under another name files an Assumed Name, which needs no newspaper publication and lasts five years.
2. Get an EIN for your bank account and contracts.
3. Get a local business license for where you work.
4. Check the rules for private process servers. Some places require registration, a bond or court approval before you serve papers.

Add insurance for mistakes in service, because a missed address is the kind of error courts remember.

District of Columbia Relocating Company
We are moving our existing company from California to Texas and already have an LLC and an EIN. What do we need, and do I need a business bank account to get a seller's permit?
Answer by SellerPermit.com:
10/14/2026 12:00 AM

The good news is that the EIN moves with you, and so does the company. What changes is the Texas paperwork. A California LLC doing business in Texas normally registers as a foreign LLC there, or you can form a new Texas LLC, so choose one before anything else.

1. A Texas sales and use tax permit, the seller's permit you asked about, so you can collect sales tax and buy inventory at wholesale.
2. An Assumed Name Certificate if the company operates under a name other than the exact one in its formation documents. No newspaper publication is required.
3. A Texas unemployment account if you have employees there. Texas has no state wage tax, so there is no withholding account.
4. A local business license or permit for your industry and location.

A business bank account is usually not a legal requirement for the permit itself, but you need one to keep company money out of your personal account, and wholesalers often ask for it.

Virtual Assistant business licensing

Q: What do I need to start a virtual assistant business with a partner?

A: Virtual assistants work from home for clients, and with a partner the paperwork grows a little. Here is the checklist:
1. Federal tax ID number (EIN)
2. Sales tax check for your state
3. Partnership agreement and client contracts
4. DBA for the shared business name
5. Local business license

Two Virtual Assistants, One Business Name

Service businesses like this usually need a federal tax ID number (EIN), a local business license and careful income records, while sales tax on services varies by state. A state employer ID waits until you hire subcontractors as employees. With client logins and files on the table, confidentiality terms matter, and so does a written plan for who covers a client if one partner is out sick. Settle how you will split income before the first invoice goes out.

Two assistants, Lucia and Quinn, share one client list, one calendar and, after some back-and-forth, one name. The Doing Business As (DBA) filing for Tandem Desk Support lists both of them as owners, which is why both names appear on the paperwork and the bank forms. The smooth key tops of a quiet laptop keyboard are the only sound at work, though the DBA only labels the partnership.

• A reliable laptop, headset and backup internet
• Professional liability and cyber insurance
• A password manager with shared vaults
• A written agreement on splitting clients and income

Two names on the paperwork, one name on the invoice.

NAICS code: 561410 (Document Preparation Services).
